There are many challenges being Mayor, however there are also many opportunities as well. Usually the challenges are based on funding. There are many good ideas on how to fix issues however there isn't always the appetite to fund the solutions. We all agree there are issues with our transportation system, buses, rapid transit, goods movement and commuting. We all have different perspectives on how to fund all of the proposed solutions. We as Mayors continually make the statement that property tax is over- subscribed and is not an equitable method of taxation, we need additional partners and tools. One area that there should be no disagreement is working together. We need all levels of government and stakeholders at the table as we look for funding solutions. All players need to go to the table with an open mind with all options on the table for discussion.

Today the Mayors’ Committee and the Province of BC signed a Memorandum of Understanding  to work together and partner in the discussions on solutions to the funding challenges facing the expansion of TransLink services, including the Evergreen Line. The MOU does not have any specifics; however, it does provide some direction and the foundation to establish a partnership with the Province to work together. This should be the least of our issues; the ratepayers in our communities expect all levels of government to work together.

I am optimistic that we will have open and transparent discussions as we move forward. There will be tough decisions; however, we need to engage the people who will pay for it. One thing is for sure, there is not one tax payer who is not already feeling the effects of the recession.

The Premier made it clear that the Evergreen Line will be built and open in 2014. Further, this year the Mayors’ Committee will receive a supplementary budget from TransLink on the Evergreen Line. Prior to the Mayors receiving the budget supplement, there will be public input on the budget. Stay tuned, I will let you know when and where you can comment. Of course, we are continuing to work to push for the Evergreen Line to come to Port Coquitlam in phase one. Stay tuned.
