It’s All About our Future – Do you have 2020 vision?
Last night we officially kicked off the Port Coquitlam Strategic Plan public consultation. This plan will focus the City of Port Coquitlam over the next 10 years; in essence this plan will provide a road map. As a Council we have been working hard to engage all residents and businesses, we have been using traditional public input meetings; however, we have also brought the decision into your home, your office, or the local coffee shop. The strategic plan will be no different; we will be asking you, through a variety of methods, your thoughts for the direction of our community.
There are four key directions we will use to focus the discussion, they are:
- Financial Sustainability
- Environmental Sustainability
- Community Sustainability
- Responsible Management
The public consultation phase will begin in October 2010 and will include:
- Telephone Survey (statistically valid) – 400 randomly selected residents and 200 businesses will be contacted in October 2010 to provide a scientific methodology for collecting input on priorities and support for the goal areas being considered. If you are called, please take 10 minutes to respond and provide your input.
- Online Survey – Starting in October 2010, everyone in Port Coquitlam will have the opportunity to provide their input by clicking on the survey button of our home page at portcoquitlam.ca
- Focus Groups – In November, we’ll be conducting focus groups with randomly selected residents and businesses to explore, in more depth, the goal areas we’ve identified. If you receive a call from the group recruiter, please consider taking two hours from your busy schedule to have your say.
- Stakeholder Meetings – In addition to focus groups, we’re also talking with representatives from local stakeholder groups. These meetings will provide more opportunity for community members who have specific areas of interest or expertise to share their input and discuss the goal areas.
- Staff Engagement – City staff will share their input through staff meetings and a staff survey similar to the public survey.

Following completion of initial consultations, we will develop a draft Strategic Plan, incorporating input received and considering it along with technical and financial inputs. The draft plan will then be available online for people to review and provide additional input through public open houses and additional meetings in January 2011. The plan will then be finalized for implementation in Spring 2011.
