Press Release from the Port Coquitlam Heritage & Cultural Society
Title: Heritage One Step Closer to a New Home
The Port Coquitlam Heritage and Cultural Society received good news on Tuesday from the City of Port Coquitlam, that their application to move into the vacant Ten Thousand Villages location in the Outlet has been approved by Mayor and Council.
"We have been working with the City for nine months on moving into the Arts Village, we are pleased to receive approval from the City." states Pippa Van Velzen, President of the Port Coquitlam Heritage and Cultural Society. Over the past three years the Society and City have made great progress advancing heritage in our City. For the first time in Port Coquitlam history there is a Heritage Strategic Plan, that provides direction to save and celebrate our past. The plan has already started to be implemented through the creation of a Heritage Registry. The Heritage Inventory is in its draft stage and a Community Workshop is scheduled for November 22nd at 6:30pm in the Outlet in Leigh Square. This interactive session will be an opportunity for the public to identify the places, stories and people that reflect the cultural history of Port Coquitlam and to provide input on which of these are the most important.
The resolution from City Council regarding the new space for the Society is:
"That the Port Coquitlam Heritage & Cultural Society be offered the entire space vacated by the Ten Thousand Villages Retail Store on the condition that the said society will enter into a partnership agreement satisfactory to the City and that such agreement will include terms of tenancy, financial contributions (both capital and operating), and the potential accommodation of Terry Fox memorabilia in display cases in the future."
Mayor and Council will be in attendance at the general meeting of the Society on Thursday November 17th to make the announcement.
