The presentation is a gift from the Bower family to the City of Port Coquitlam. It is a Terry Fox Print – number 3868 of only 5000 printed. The print is a copy of an original oil painting entitled the ‘Marathon of Hope’ by Cliff Kearns.
Mr. Kearns wrote, “By putting the morning sun and redwoods behind him, I wanted to suggest that Terry has already realized his goal. I sought to capture the struggle, symbolized by the light fighting its way through the dark branches, the determination, and the hope, and suggest by his efforts a more imminent breakthrough or victory.”
The Bower family purchased the print in the early 1980s and Albert Bower (Steven Bower’s father) told his son Steven that he thought the print should be in a place of prominence where the people of Port Coquitlam could appreciate it. Steven Bower approached the City earlier this year and the City decided to unveil and hang the print around the same time as ‘Terry Fox Week’ in Port Coquitlam and the Hometown Run.
After the unveiling, the picture will be hung in the main floor of City Hall for everyone to enjoy.
