Press Release from the Port Coquitlam Heritage & Cultural Society

Title: Heritage One Step Closer to a New Home

The Port Coquitlam Heritage and Cultural Society received good news on Tuesday from the City of Port Coquitlam, that their application to move into the vacant Ten Thousand Villages location in the Outlet has been approved by Mayor and Council.

"We have been working with the City for nine months on moving into the Arts Village, we are pleased to receive approval from the City." states Pippa Van Velzen, President of the Port Coquitlam Heritage and Cultural Society.

altThe presentation is a gift from the Bower family to the City of Port Coquitlam. It is a Terry Fox Print – number 3868 of only 5000 printed. The print is a copy of an original oil painting entitled the ‘Marathon of Hope’ by Cliff Kearns.

Mr. Kearns wrote, “By putting the morning sun and redwoods behind him, I wanted to suggest that Terry has already realized his goal. I sought to capture the struggle, symbolized by the light fighting its way through the dark branches, the determination, and the hope, and suggest by his efforts a more imminent breakthrough or victory.”

The Bower family purchased the print in the early 1980s and Albert Bower (Steven Bower’s father) told his son Steven that he thought the print should be in a place of prominence where the people of Port Coquitlam could appreciate it. Steven Bower approached the City earlier this year and the City decided to unveil and hang the print around the same time as ‘Terry Fox Week’ in Port Coquitlam and the Hometown Run.

After the unveiling, the picture will be hung in the main floor of City Hall for everyone to enjoy.

Port Coquitlam is Recognized for Civic Engagement

The City of Port Coquitlam has been awarded the Best Practices Civic Engagement Award  at the Union of BC Municipalities’ annual Community Excellence Awards ceremony.

The awards showcased BC municipalities and regional districts that lead the pack, take risks to innovate, establish new partnerships, question established ways of doing business, and pioneer new customer service practices. I am proud of our work to reach everyone in our community in new ways through technology, thus making it easier for our residents to participate in the decision-making process at their leisure.

One of my main aspects of my platform when I ran for Mayor of Port Coquitam was to engage our residents and business. To do this we needed to think differently, we needed to use the web and other tools that are available. Over the past two years we have reached out through new mediums and we have moved our input opportunities from City Hall and into our community. I am proud of the work our Council has done as well as the leadership from our staff. Our residents and businesses have more opportunity to lead our community and make Port Coquitlam a wonderful place today and into the future.

As part of my journey to seek the office of Mayor of Port Coquitlam, I hope to have a conversation with you.

In September, I am hosting seven Town Hall Meetings. I will meet you in local schools and parks, close to your home. It’s important to all of us that you come and share your thoughts and ideas for the future of Port Coquitlam. Please meet me at any of the times and locations listed below. I will be there rain or shine.

I believe now is the time for change. I believe that together, you and I can build the strong leadership that our community needs and deserves. It is vital that your voice is heard. Let’s start with a conversation about how we can work together to put our community back on track and regain our PoCo Pride.
